An Example of Learning

In the Pre-school unit there will be many learning and development opportunities for the children. These activities are planned around the children’s interests encompassing the seven areas of learning. Many activities allow children to explore all seven areas of learning and development. An example of this would be growing sunflowers during our ‘Growing and living’ topic. In this we would get the children to plant their seeds and care for them, increasing their skills in Understanding the world. While the sunflower is growing we would get the children on a weekly basis to measure how tall their plant is growing, take a photograph and record this in a diary, increasing their skills in mathematics, literacy and technology.

We would use these photographs to make a book, telling the story of the sunflower during circle time in front of their peers increasing their communication and language skills as well as their personal, social and emotional skills. Once the flower has fully grown the children would work as a group to draw, paint, collage etc their own picture of the sunflower, learning how to share and use tools and equipment as well as increasing their physical fine motor skills and exploring media through expressive arts and design.

We would extend this further into allowing the children to explore gross motor movement through being a sunflower growing in time and dance. Other opportunities include counting the petals on their sunflower, comparing the length of sunflowers, talking about the different colours, describing all the parts of a sunflower. You can see how with one simple concept or idea, children’s learning can grow and develop.
