Understanding the World
Understanding the world for Reception Children
Understanding of the World is about how children get to know about other people, the place where they live and about all aspects of the environment.
Understanding the World is broken down into three aspects:
- People and Communities
- The World
People and communities
Children enjoy joining in with family customs and routines at home and are encouraged to share these experiences with us in nursery. It is encouraged that children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. They know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions.
This aspect encourages children to look at the similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. By using skills to observe the world around them children are able to talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how this may vary from other environments. Children make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur.
In this aspect children have already learnt that some toys and objects have a cause and effect relationship, for example pressing the button on a pop up toy makes something appear. From their knowledge in literacy they understand that information can be retrieved in a variety of ways. Technology enables children to recognize a range of technology that is used in different places and sect technology for a specific purpose, for example a camera for taking pictures.
At Toybox children will learn to recognise that a range of technology can be used in various places, being able to select and use technology for a particular purpose such as cameras to photograph activities and then making a book or set of instructions from these. Using torches to make shadows and maybe put on a shadow puppet play for the other children. We encourage the children to use tills in the role play area or using the CD player to put on music.
