An Example of Learning
In the toddler unit there will be many learning and development opportunities for the children. These activities are planned around the children’s interests encompassing the seven areas of learning. Many activities allow children to explore all seven areas of learning and development. An example of this would be dressing up and role play during our ‘Let’s pretend’ topic. The role play area would be themed for example if a child had visited the doctors the week before and this was the focus of their play then we would change the role play area into a doctors surgery.
Opportunity is provided for the children to be creative and imaginative with their play, with practitioners modelling questioning language to encourage children to think about what they are doing and why, drawing upon their own experiences to make these decisions and engaging others in their play. These skills encourage children’s expressive arts and design skills, communication and language skills and understanding the world. Children will have appointment cards to ‘write’ for their patients and begin to gain and understanding of time, past, present and future, these build on a child’s literacy and mathematical skills. Children will be encouraged and guided by practitioners to dress and undress themselves during role play as well as helping their peers. This increases their personal, social and emotional development as well as their physical skills.
