Understanding the World
Understanding the World for Toddlers
Understanding the World incorporates how children get to know about other people, the place where they live and about all aspects of the environment.
Understanding the World is broken down into three aspects:
- People and Communities
- The World
People and communities
This area encourages children to learn that they are the same as their friends but different in some respect and to accept and recognise these similarities and differences. Children develop a sense of self as well as their own immediate family and relations. Children also begin to have their own friends and start to establish these through similar interests, hobbies and likes. During role play, children use everyday actions they have observed at home or out in the environment such as drinking tea or cooking.
This aspect encompasses children noticing features in their environment and talking about them, such as aero planes in the sky or diggers in the mud. This broadens children’s knowledge about the world around them. Children also enjoy playing with small world models such as farms, airports and train track and using every day narrative during play.
This area looks at children and their basic skills in operating equipment such as pretend cameras, phones, laptops, pop up toys and jack in the boxes. It also identifies children’s abilities to operate mechanical toys like friction cars and windup toys. Children are able to recognise that things they do have an effect and cause something to happen.
At Toybox we support children by providing safe ICT equipment for children to play with as well as talking to them about what it does, how they can use it and how to do so safely. Practitioners also talk to children about larger ICT equipment such as the printer allowing children to print pictures they have created using the computer, or the photocopier to copy pictures they have drawn. Practitioners also encourage children to talk about their experiences such as birthdays, holidays or places they have been to.
