An Example of Learning
In the under 2’s unit there will be many learning and development opportunities for the children. These activities are planned around the children’s interests encompassing the seven areas of learning. Many activities allow children to explore all seven areas of learning and development.
An example of this would be treasury baskets during our topic of ‘Let’s explore my senses’. Through having different objects in treasury baskets children are able to explore a range of colours, noises, textures, smells, tastes and shapes. Children are encouraged to explore a variety of textures and practitioners will be talking to the children about the different feels and encourage them to offer babbling in return, increasing their communication and language skills and expressive arts and design skills.
Through this exploratory play between practitioner and children, bonds are strengthened, allowing children to build confidence and enjoyment in play, increasing their personal, social and emotional development. By reaching out for items, touching, holding, mouthing, feeling, manipulating them children can explore materials and their properties, starting to discover shapes and sizes. All of this encourages children’s mathematical development, physical development, literacy skills and understanding the world. These are essential skills that children need to continue to be confident in discovering the world around them
